If harvested young, the robust fruits are perfect for pickling. In Germany pickled gerkins are traditionally served on the morning after a heavy night of drinking. Harvest festivals usually end with what is known as Kater Fruehstuck -hangover breakfast, gammon, mash, sauerkraut and pickled gerkins.

Annual plant. Prefers a warm sunny position. Sow in spring indoors. Plant out after the last expected frost and give the plants some protection and (optional) a climbing frame.
