Botanical name:
Agave americana

One of the agaves from which tequila is distilled, native to Central America. The maguey was formerly believed to flower only once a century and still holds the common name "century plant", but it does in-fact blossom every 20-30 years. The liquor or mezcal obtained from its sap is known as the "real" tequila which comes from the Mexican state of Jalisco in which the town of Tequila lies. Fermented sap is also used to brew the Mexican national beverage pulque. For extracting the agave sap, the stem of the flowers is cut open. The sweet juice also has many medicinal properties.
Package with 20 mezcal agave seeds

Growing instructions
The maguey seeds are scattered onto moist, sandy cactus soil. Do not cover the small seeds completely, but press them gently into the soil. Cover them with a glass cover or a small greenhouse dome to keep the seeds in constant moisture at temperatures of about 20 °C (68 °F). In winter, the dormant period, plants should be watered very little and carefully. In summer they may be watered more often. Plant care takes place in a quite similar way as with cactus plants.
