Description

Tea plays a very important role in many countries, both as a sacrament and as a profane stimulant and luxury food. Its history is inextricably linked to all ancient cultures of Asia. As an important caffeine-containing plant (as are coffee, mate or
guarana), the tea plant is also of great economic importance.

From the leaves of the genuine tea shrub both green and black tea are produced. In Central Europe, it can only be kept indoors during the year and is of limited use as a crop, but is can also be regarded as a purely ornamental houseplant. There are some reports of successful experiments in self-supporting tea cultivation in a heated greenhouse or in winter gardens with ventilation and other plants which protect the tea shrub from high temperatures and direct sunlight.

Camelia sinensis, approx. 5 tea seeds

Growing instructions

The tea plant is suitable for winter garden or indoor culture in Central European climates. It is best to sow the seeds immediately in peat or cooir substrate approx. 2 cm deep and put them in a damp and warm environment. The plant likes moderately warm, bright locations with high humidity and not too harsh direct sunlight. Use peat-containing permeable soil and if possible soft water. Avoid exposing the plant to direct air flow from heaters in your apartment. Overwinter in a cool and bright spot.
