Description

The angel's trumpet tree belongs to the Brugmansia species of the nightshade family. Originally native to South America, more precisely to Ecuador, Peru and northern Chile, it is by now probably extinct in its wild form, but can be found all over the world in naturalized or cultivated form, especially in Asia.

It is especially appreciated for its decorative white flowers resembling trumpets or bells, and cultivated as a patio plant which blooms from summer to autumn or even into the winter. The tree datura is one of the hardiest representatives of Brugmansia and tolerates temperatures down to -10 °C in sheltered places, but should nevertheless be hibernated in a garage or an unheated room when cultivated in pots.

In Peru, the leaves of the angel's trumpet trees are used for the treatment of tumours and to alleviate fever. It is believed that the seeds were used as an anaesthetic in pre-Columbian times, possibly in combination with leaves of the coca shrub. Currently, the plant is only used in homeopathic dilution.
