Description

Some agricultural crops from the tropics and subtropics grow well in Central European climates and even produce fruits successfully, bringing a bit of the exotic to our domestic kitchen gardens.

In our selection we include some of our favourite tropical plant varieties from across the globe, which can be home grown from seeds successfully in our climates and which are still rare and exotic entries to our local gardening culture.
For this seed kit we hand selected 6 agricultural crop plants from the tropics and subtropics:
  • Okra/ okro/ ladies' fingers, ochro/ gumbo 'Clemson' (Abelmoschus esculentus)
The okra variety 'Clemson' is very resilient and well adapted to European climates. This delicious vegetable can often be found in mediteranean, Arabic and Thai cooking recipes and is commonly served either parboiled or stir-fried.
  • Cape gooseberry/ capuli/ physalis (Physalis peruvianus)
Cape gooseberries are a true exotic delicacy and its flavoursome yellow 'berries' can be enjoyed from August till the start of the frost period.
  • Narrow-leaved tea tree/ narrow-leaved paperbark/ narrow-leaved ti-tree/ snow-in-summer (Melaleuca alternifolia)
As a plant we know of tea tree because of its powerful essential oil, which is highly antiseptic, antibacterial and fungicidal and therefore used world wide for alternative medical treatments.
  • Lemon grass/ lemongrass/ barbed wire grass/ silky heads/ citronella grass/ fever grass (Cymbopogon flexuosus)
The incredible lemon flavour of lemon grass is truly delightful and its stalks can be used for seasoning food, for tea infusions and to extract the famous lemongrass essential oil.
  • Peanut/ groundnut/ goober (Arachis hypogaea)
Surprisingly, peanuts are easy to grow as pot plants and super healthy. They may be consumed as they are by themselves and also taste very yummy added to sauces and salads!
  • Indian shot/ achira/ canna/ bandera/ chancle/ coyol/ saka siri/ platanillo (Canna indica)
Indian shot is a beautiful South American flowering plant. Traditionally, its rhizome, which contains starch, has been consumed as food.
The seeds of each variety are packaged in a separate sachet.
