Natural habitats on the African continent offer ideal climatic conditions for chili plants. So its no surprise that Africa has its own traditional chili varieties.
The typical spice mixes from the north-western regions such as Harissa and Ras el-Hanout all contain local chillis. As in the Caribbean, chillies in Africa are often combined with flavours such as cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger or cardamom. In addition, the north African cuisine is known for its interesting use of fresh mint, nana mint and coriander.
