Basil has a great variety of species to offer, which in fact have very different and special aromas.


With these 8 basil varieties you will get a good insight into the diversity of this aromatic herb:
  • Lemon basil (Ocimum americanum)
    Asian basil variety with lemony aroma.
  • Thai basil (Ocimum basilicum)
    A type of basil that smells of anise and tastes slightly tangier and spicier. Very typical aroma in Thai noodle soups.
  • Mexican basil (Ocimum basilicum)
    Despite its famous namesake, Mexican basil only just about carries a hint of the Italian basil flavour. Its aroma is quite unique and includes notes of cinnamon and aniseed, with an underlying hotness.
  • Lettuce Leaf Basil (Ocimum basilicum)
    The classic Italian basil variety with large and slightly spicy tasting leafs. The ideal choice for home-made pesto and fresh caprese salad.
  • Purple Basil(Ocimum basilicum)
    'Purple basil' is a beautiful basil variety with highly decorative purple leafs.
  • Tulsi / Holy basil (Ocimum sanctum, tenuiflorum)
    The leaves are used to make a healing tea, which is used especially for all weaknesses in the digestive tract, to protect the immune system, against stress, for internal heat treatment and to lower cholesterol levels.
  • Sweet basil 'Genovese' (Ocimum basilikum)
    'Genovese' is the classic, Italian basil variety, with large, slightly tangy tasting leaves, which put pesto on the culinary world map. It is also ideal for infusing caprese salads.
  • Wild basil (Ocimum canum)
    This African basil has a slight camphor note. It is very insensitive to typical diseases, lignifies over time and is an ideal pot plant. A pesto from the leaves tastes excellent.
