Not only for textiles, but also for paper production various plants were absolutely indispensable before the industrial process of paper production from wood pulp was developed.

Linseed, hemp or nettles are among the most famous ethnobotanically important fiber crops which are still used today. In many different cultures, however, many more and different fibrous and fast-growing plants have been grown to harvest raw materials for fabric production, insulation, upholstery and mattress, pillow or cushion filling.

For paper, on the other hand, thanks to the simplicity of recycling, none of the plants is economically relevant anymore - with the exception of handmade paper produced in small quantities.
