By growing chicory it is possible to harvest fresh vegetables and salad in the middle of winter! To achieve this feat, you'll have to dig up the roots in autumn and let them sprout indoors in winter. But also in summer, chicory provides you with a

Sow directly outdoors from mid-June to the end of July. Only slightly sprinkle the seeds with soil and gently press them into the ground as they need light to germinate. Prick out to maintain a distance of 30 x 30cm. Prefers good, loose garden soil in a sunny location and needs sufficient water. Ideally, the soil should be loosened profoundly before planting to promote beet growth. The roots can be dug up from September on and should then be transplanted into a bucket or a similar container with some moist soil and covered with a lid. At 12 to 18 °C, you can repeatedly harvest newly grown chicory in the coming weeks.
