Gotu Kola is an important medicinal herb that is widely used in India, even considered a "herb of longevity" in many parts of Asia. 1-2 fresh leaves are said to reduce stress and improve cerebral metabolism without sedating effects. Centella Asiatica is chiefly valued as a revitalizing herb that strengthens nervous function and memory. In India, it is a common saying that elephants, who are very fond of Gotu Kola, gain their good memory from eating it. Centella Asiatica is also used in India to promote meditation.

The leaves taste pleasantly spicy and are also used as a leave vegetable or curry spice. Gotu Kola grows as a creeping plant in humid forests and is a good groundcover. Kept in pots it forms long overhanging branches. Other names for Centella Asiatica are Indian or Asian Marsh Pennywort, Tiger Grass, Brahmi, Fo-Ti-Tieng, or Gotu Kola.
