The Red Valerian is an enormously undemanding, long-flowering plant of the Valerian family from the Mediterranean region that likes to grow on barren, sandy grounds in a sunny location and can be settled easily in stone gardens.
It has hardly any demands regarding irrigation and tolerated fresh and dry soils. Only waterlogging is problematic - the red valerian also has the image of only growing really well when neglected.

Larger plants bloom bright red to crimson from spring to autumn. But it's more than just a long-living dash of colour in the shrub bed. The red valerian is used like lamb's lettuce when young and makes a good salad. The boiled root is also edible. Furthermore, it's medically active and has a calming effect although it shows a different active agent combination.

Hardy perennial. Sow directly outdoors between February and May. In the first winter, protection may be necessary so that the young plants don't freeze.

Blooms again when the faded inflorescences are removed - when pruning in late autumn, even a heyday in November is possible.
