Sowing & cultivation
- Sowing period: From January onwards, it can be sown in the cold frame and from March onwards outdoors
- Sowing depth: 1-2,5 cm
- Ideal germination temperature: +3°C or more
- Germination duration: Carrots need very long, 21-27 days on average. As a result, it’s recommended to mix the seeds either with radish seeds or with dill seeds. Both germinates clearly faster and, thereby, marks the row, so that the care of the sowing is facilitated. By harvesting the radish, which is ripe earlier, the rows are thinned automatically. The dill should also be removed when it has achieved a height of 25 cm.
- Row spacing: 30-45 cm
- Planting distance: 3-5 cm
- Location: Sunny
- Soil: Sandy-clayey, deep, loose and stone-free soil. This variety prospers very well in clayey soils.
- Care: Carrots are moderate feeders and can’t stand fresh manure. Use ripe compost for fertilizing only. Carrots want to be kept moist during germination time and often need supplementary watering on sandy soils during the hot summer months. It’s absolutely necessary to weed in early life stages as the tender plants are ranked fast with weeds. For good results, the soil should be loosened regularly. Especially after strong rain when it tends to silt up.
- Harvest: Mostly from May to July. There’s no clear sign for ripeness.
- Family: Umbelliferas (Apiaceae)
