'Giants of Colmar' is a late carrot variety suitable for storage. Very juicy, and producing magnificently large roots, it can keep really well for months at a time if stored in the right conditions. Generally it is not sown until May.

This is a very old, heirloom carrot of the Colmar-Géante type, probably a selection from the Red Giant variety which has been on the market since 1900 at least.

Storage carrots are slow-growing carrots, with a long ripening period - the time required from sowing to harvest is around 140 to 190 days.

  • When to sow: Sow in a cold frame from January onwards or outdoors from March – although storage carrots are generally sown from mid-May onwards.
  • Sowing depth: 1-2.5 cm
  • Ideal germination temperature: +3°C or above
  • Germination period: Carrots take a very long time to germinate – 21-27 days on average. Because of this it makes sense to mix the seeds with either radish or dill seeds. Both will germinate significantly faster, making the row location visible and making it easier to look after your seedlings. The radishes will ripen earlier and harvesting them will automatically thin the rows. The dill should also be removed when it has grown around 25 cm high.
  • Row spacing: 30-45 cm
  • Plant spacing: 3-5 cm
  • Location: Sunny
  • Soil: Sandy-clayey, deep, loose and stone-free. This variety does very well in clayey soils.
  • Care: Carrots are moderate feeders and won’t tolerate fresh manure. For fertilising use only well-rotted compost. Carrots should be kept moist during germination and often need extra watering on sandy soils during the hot summer months. Weeding is vital, especially in the early growth stages as the tender young plants are easily outcompeted by weeds. For good results the soil should be loosened regularly, especially after heavy rainfall when it can silt up.
  • Harvest: Mostly from May to July. There’s no clear external sign to show that carrots are ripe.
  • Family: Umbellifers (Apiaceae)
