The Pole Bean 'Cosse Violette' is a robust, early, Italian variety, which is also known under the name 'Trionto Violetto'. The stringless pods are intensely violet, about 15-20 cm long and flat with light brown beans. When cooked, the violet colour
is lost and the beans become green.

Sow outdoors from mid-May after the Ice Saints. Beans are often sown in clusters of five to six seeds together in a planting hole, keeping a distance of about 40 cm between clusters. Row spacing approx. 100 cm. The beans mustn't be buried more than 2 cm deep. Seeds of legumes often germinate better if they are pre-soaked in water for a few hours. Runner beans are climbers and need a trellis. Suitable are rods or cords that are already completed and installed before sowing.
Beans are most comfortable at temperatures between 18 and 25 °C. They prefer a sunny, wind-protected location and deep, humus-rich soil. When the plants have grown about 20 cm high, earthing up is highly recommended.
