The wild form of this aster appears in Japan, Korea, and China. In China, it has already been cultivated for 2000 years. In Europe, it has been appreciated as a decorative plant in summer borders and cottage gardens as well as as a cut flower since
the 18th century. Ever since it has had a long breeding tradition.

The general name is garden aster. The varieties with filled flower heads with claw-like, slim petals are called China aster. They appear in all typical aster colours from white to light yellow, pink to purple.
The annual summer flower is a great cut flower for colourful summer and autumn bunches with a good keepability and an overall very long duration of flowering. In the bed, it's also a notable permanent bloomer that magically attracts bees, bumblebees, butterflies, and many other insects with its nectar.
