Chinese is not only a very tasty spring vegetable (at least botanically - most often, it's commonly seen as a fruit) but also a decorative supplement for every shrub bed.
If it is allowed to bloom, it sky-rockets and forms yellowish blossoms - but what's really spectacular is the sight of the seeds.

The roots of rhubarb, which is wildly growing in the Himalayas, are a well-tried laxative in Chinese medicine. The usage of the pulpy stalks, e.g. in compote or as rhubarb cake, is, however, still very young (approx. 250 years). In the second year, the young stalks can be harvested. They shouldn't be cut but broken off above the roots.

Chinese rhubarb loves nutrient-rich soils and a sunny to half-shady location. The plants are pre-cultivated indoors and planted outdoors after the last frosts. In autumn, the aerial plant parts die off, the rootstock hibernates. For vegetative reproduction, the rhizome can be divided after several years.
