Lemon Grass is one of the most important spice herbs in the Asian kitchen. Two varieties are agriculturally cultivated in South East Asia and India, C. Citratus and C. Flexuosus. The East-Indian Lemon Grass probably comes from Cambodia or Sri Lanka
and is - although it's exactly equal in use - more often cultivated as a supplier for essential oils than as a spice. It's a meaningful medicinal plant of Ayurveda and is said to be mood-lifting. Recent research shows that it has a strong fungus and germ destructive effect and that it's enormously effective against the notorious hospital bacteria MRSA.

Lemon Grass is mainly used in the Indonesian and Thai kitchen, where it's often used together with coconut milk. It's also very popular as a tea herb as it unfolds a refreshing lemon flavour with a hint of ginger and can be dried well. When it's used for cooking, it's worth soaking the dried herb in water for a while before cooking.

Press the seeds in sowing compost and keep them warm (20-30°C). The tropical grass grows well on the windowsill indoors. Needs much warmth and fertilizer. In very mild locations, perennial outdoor cultivation is also possible in Europe - the aerial plant parts have to be cut back (harvested) before winter and the roots have to be covered so that the plant can hibernate protected in the soil. Frosts down to -10°C are tolerated when there's good winter protection.
