The Great Masterwort is a fast-growing Central European perennial shrub and wildflower, which is popular as an ornamental plant in the garden in its various colourful cultivars. In its wild form, it has white, jagged flowers and reaches a maximum height of about one meter.
Naturally occurring plants are found in the Alps and on other mountain pastures. In parts of France, Spain and Andorra, it is a protected species. It is known as a good nectar plant for bees and bumblebees.

Especially in Austria, the great masterwort is used for its healing effects in herbal medicine, where the entire dried plant is used as a gentle diuretic in herbal teas. The root of the plant, which has often been confused with that of the masterwort (Imperatoria ostruthium) in medical records due to the visual similarity, has a laxative effect and is harvested in autumn. Main actor is the saponin alpha-hederin contained in ivy.

Main harvest:
It is a fast-growing perennial herbaceous plant, which tolerates frost up to -15 °C. The seeds need a cold period to germinate and should either be sown outdoors in autumn or require cold stratification before sowing in spring (starting from February).

Suitable for growing the plant is nutritious, sandy, and loamy soil and a location in the half shade, although with very good water supply it also tolerates sunny locations. Moist, calcareous soil favors growth. Flowering time is from May to September but the plant reaches its full bloom and growth height only in the second or third year.
