Hops belongs to the hemp family (Cannabaceae) and is, from an ethnobotanical point of view, probably one of the most important intoxication plants in Europe.


Besides its meaning as a beer spice, the hop cones are also used medically as a strongly sedative remedy. Furthermore, it's a markedly decorative creeper. Young sprouts in spring are prepared as a vegetable ("Hops Asparagus").

A hardy perennial vine. This plant is a cold-germinator. Sow in very early spring or autumn. After a 1-2 year-long development, hops shows dramatic growth. Ideally, the plant climbs up to 7 metres high. In autumn, the aerial part dies off completely and sprouts again in spring. One plant can get 40-50 years old.
