The horse bean is a crucially older form of the bell bean with small seeds that, today, only is significant regionally anymore, for example in the Westphalian region. As early as 5000 B.C., it has already been cultivated in the Mediterranean region.
Its climax was in Europe in the Middle Ages. Until the 16th century, it was an enormously important staple food but was then superseded by the tropical garden beans that were imported from the New World.

Like its innumerable names, including horse bean and field bean, testify, it was, henceforth, mainly grown as greenstuff. However, it is also a good vegetable with a sweetish taste. Furthermore, it doesn't need climbing support but simply grows bush upwards.

Sow horse beans directly outdoors as early as possible, already from the end of February. Break out the stem tips for good growth. Horse beans taste best when harvested young. Seeds of legumes often germinate a lot better when they are allowed to pre-soak in water for several hours.
