The Hyacinth Bean, also called Indian Bean or Egyptian Bean, presumably originates from Africa but is also cultivated in tropical India. The blossoms and pods are purple-coloured, making Lablab purpureus a markedly decorative plant. The beans are
used like the ones of the garden bean - the young pods and the ripe seeds can be eaten when boiled. The taste of the hyacinth bean is intensely aromatic. Furthermore, it can also be used for green manure. Due to its scenting, and purple blossoms, it's also used as a climber for facade greenery.
In Kenya, the hyacinth bean has a reputation for stimulating milk production and is, therefore, often consumed by young mothers.

Sowing outdoors after the Ice Saints from mid-May to the beginning of June. Sowing depth: 2-4 cm. When sowing in a row, a planting distance of 40-50 cm in the row and 100-120 cm between the rows is to be maintained. Likes sun and medium shade. Can’t stand wet soils. Runner beans need a stick or something else to climb upon.
