Sowing & cultivation
Sow outdoors from the end of April. Beans are often sown in clusters of five to six seeds together in a planting hole, keeping a distance of about 40 cm between clusters. Row spacing approx. 100 cm. The beans mustn't be buried deeper than 2 cm. Seeds of legumes often germinate better if they are pre-soaked in water for a few hours.
Runner beans are climbers and necessarily need a trellis. Suitable are rods or cords that should already be completed and installed before sowing.
Beans are most comfortable at temperatures between 18 and 25 °C. They prefer a sunny, wind-protected location and deep, humus-rich soil. When the plants have grown about 20 cm high, earthing up is highly recommended.
