Liquorice is a perennial, hardy shrub that belongs to the Papilionaceae family. It's not only a versatile spice and medicinal plant but is, with its beautiful blue and violet late summer heyday, also suitable as a decorative plant for the shrub garden.
Besides anise, the juice of its root is the main ingredient of the popular, deep black candy liquorice and contains a very high concentration of sweeteners.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Glycyrrhiza Glabra is known as Gan Cae and one of the most important medicinal plants. It's said that liquorice is one of the few herbs that can be consumed over a long period without falling into an imbalance. The effect is similar to cortisone, analgesic and anti-inflammatory, and, on top of that, detoxifying and harmonizing for all organs. Improves the efficacy of other remedies.

Until the harvest of liquorice, you should plan three years. Then, the taproot has developed a sufficiently large rhizome with strong secondary roots that can be cautiously lifted with a spade in autumn and harvested.
