The Loofah, also called climbing okra or rag gourd, (Syn.: Luffa aegyptiaca) belongs to the gourd family and is prevalent in tropical Asia and Africa. In the West, the loofah is especially known for its spongy innards. Out of those, compostable
dish-, bath-, and massage sponges are produced. To make "sponges" out of the fully matured loofahs, the fruits are boiled in water. Subsequently, the pulp can be washed out and loosened from the skin easily. What's left is the sponge. Cut into slices, beautiful soap holders also come about.

In Asia, loofahs are used especially in the kitchen. Therefore, the still unripe fruits are harvested as they are the most tender at this state.
The loofah can be kept in the greenhouse or in the apartment.

Luffa is an annual climber and likes a lot of sun. Seeds germinate at about 20-25 °C. Continue culture in a pot on the patio, in the greenhouse or the apartment. Requires stalks or a frame or similar and possibly needs to be tied to the trellis.
