The parsnip variety 'half-length', also called 'Halblange', is extremely productive. It forms approx. 20-30cm long, thick and tapered, cream-coloured roots. Parsnip is a very versatile vegetable and belonged to the staple foods in Europe from the
age of the Roman empire up to the 18th century. Since then, competition has picked up with potatoes and carrots but parsnip still remains popular in many countries.

The sowing is very uncomplicated. The white roots have a pleasantly spicy taste and are excellently storable.

Parsnip can be sown directly outdoors, in rows, from the beginning of March. In central Europe, May is ideal. The seeds can be mixed with radish and lettuce to mark the rows. Sowing depth: 1-2cm. After sprouting, spread out the seedlings at a distance of 5-10cm to each other and in rows, which ought to be 30-50cm apart.

The biennial plant forms turnips in the first year which can be harvested from autumn to winter. In the second year, the plant develops beautiful flower umbels, which attract many insects.
