Wild garlic, ramsons or bear garlic is probably the most famous wild leek species in Central Europe. It grows in open forests, but can also be cultivated and even become feral in the garden - its strong tendency to expand is mainly due to the fact
that ants like to carry the ramsons seeds and spread the plant that way - as ist spreads generatively very often, which means via its seeds, although it's a bulbous plant.

The plant's name doesn't only come from the fact that the leaves and small bulbs are said to have health-promoting features ("Bear Garlic makes strong") but also because folk legend tells that, after their hibernation, bears were first searching the bear garlic stand of the forest to take some refreshment.

Culinarily speaking, not only the leaves, which are often used for salads or pesto, or the bulbs, which can be used analog to garlic, are relevant - it's the white blossoms which also are edible and can be used for decorative issues in the kitchen.

Furthermore, bear garlic offers all the health benefits his cultivated relative has: It's antibacterial, reduces the blood pressure and is very healthy in general.

Cold germination: Sowing time outdoors at the beginning of spring or in autumn. Alternatively, artificial stratification is possible. Mix the seeds with moist sand in a plastic bag. The bag must be kept warm and moist (approx. +20°C) for the first 2-4 weeks and then placed in the refrigerator where it should remain at a temperature of +5°C for 5-6 weeks. Then remove the plastic bag and observe regularly at room temperature whether the seeds germinate. Then prick the seedlings into pots and plant them out after the last frosts in mid-May.
Wood garlic loves half-shady to shady locations - a forest plant for permeable, rather moist soil.
