Wild garlic, ramsons or bear garlic is probably the most famous wild leek species in Central Europe. It grows in open forests, but can also be cultivated and even become feral in the garden - its strong tendency to expand is mainly due to the fact
that ants like to carry the ramsons seeds and spread the plant that way. Both leaves and bulbs may be used in cooking, and both the leaves and small bulbs are said to have health benefits ("bear garlic makes you strong as a bear")

Cold germination: Sowing time outdoors at the beginning of spring or in autumn. Alternatively, artificial stratification is possible. Mix the seeds with moist sand in a plastic bag. The bag must be kept warm and moist (approx. +20°C) for the first 2-4 weeks and then placed in the refrigerator where it should remain at a temperature of +5°C for 5-6 weeks. Then remove the plastic bag and observe regularly at room temperature whether the seeds germinate. Then prick the seedlings into pots and plant them out after the last frosts in mid-May.
Wood garlic prefers a moist soil, and grows well in a half-shaded location.
