Sage is native to Asia Minor and North Africa but has been cultivated in Europe since antiquity. It belongs to the traditional, old medicinal and spice plants.
Sage smells aromatic and tastes spicy and bitter. With its chopped leaves, meat, fish, and vegetables are seasoned. A famous dish with sage as an important ingredient is "Saltimbocca alla Romana" or pasta with sage butter.
However, sage also has a long tradition as a herb for curing diseases. Due to its agents, it is antibacterial, disinfecting, anticonvulsant, diuretic, and fungicidal. Mainly, infusions, tea, or the extracted essential oils are used for internal and external treatment. The use as a mouth wash in case of small bruises or inflammations of teeth, gum, or oral mucosa as well as in case of a sore throat is best known.
