The wildly growing sea kale is a real gourmet vegetable. It has large, fleshy, slightly blue kale leaves and plenty of white blossoms. The seeds are contained in spherical pods. There's one seed in each pod. You can continually pick leaves or bleach
the young sprouts by covering them in spring.

In the Middle Ages, the tender leave stalks comparable to broccoli used to be steamed and eaten. Along the coast of England, where it could often be found above the tidemark on pebble beaches, the natives traditionally piled pebbles around the plant's sprouts and, in this way, bleached them. Like this, it has established in Great Britain throughout the 18th century as a native vegetable. The sprouts are served like asparagus: Steamed, either with sauce hollandaise or simply with molten butter.

Today, sea kale is sometimes grown as a decorative plant. The plant also occurs wildly on wash margins of the Baltic sea but has become very rare in Germany.
