In China, the very young leaves are cooked and used as a leaf vegetable. In Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Tibetan medicine, it's known for its analgesic effect under the name Shang Lu and, therefore, used against rheumatism and cancer. The pokeberry is also said to be an old shamanic plant whose poisonous root used to be the main part of historic psychoactive preparations.

Sowing & cultivation
Perennial plant. The pokeberry loves half-shade. The plants need a spacing of approx. 50cm. Sowing: Pre-culture. The seeds need a cool temperature for germination. Therefore, they are either sown outdoors in autumn or in early spring (February). The necessary cold period can also be simulated in the fridge. For this purpose, the seeds are kept in the fridge with a little bit of damped sand (for example in a freezer bag) for 4-6 weeks. Subsequently, the seeds can be sown as usual.
