Shiso is a Japanese herb used in Sushi. The slightly cinnamon scented leaves taste best raw. The oil won from Shiso (yegoma) was traditionally used to waterproof umbrellas and for paints and printing inks.

Perilla frutescens may well be considered a classical window sill culinary herb. Shiso needs light to germinate and should therefore only be lightly pressed into the soil. When they are started indoors, they need a short cold stratification to simulate the winter season. Sow outdoors either in late fall or early spring, before the last frost. Choose nutrient-rich and well-drained soil and keep sufficiently moist, but avoid waterlogging. Perilla thrives in the sun and in partial shade.
