The styrian oil pumpkin is a splendid example for fine plant breeding, South styrian farmers carefully selected and bred its crops since 1900 in to create todays variety.

Particular to this oil pumpkin are its 'thin-skinned' seeds, which are often classified as 'skin-less' seeds. However, 'soft-skinned' would be the more precise alternative and would explain well why it is so easy to extract its highly valued pumpkin oil from the seeds.
Although the pumpkin is eatable, its taste is rather plain and it is mostly appreciated for its flavoursome pumpkin seed oil.
