Sweet Flag (Acorus Calamus) is a marshland plant with citrus fruit-scented leaves used since Hippocrates' day (460-377 BC) for curing toothache and dysentery. An infusion made from its roots is good for the stomach. Calamus was used by the Cree
Indians in divine worship and is also mentioned in the Bible as providing the holy oil for anointing altar and sacred vessels in Exodus. Known as "Vacha", it is a highly valued medicinal plant in Ayurveda.

The plant contains flavourings. Similar to the vanilla bean, the young leaves can be used for seasoning desserts. The boiled root can be eaten as a root vegetable. It has a pleasant, aromatic scent and is slightly hot.

Sweet Flag is a bog garden plant and can be stored in sealed plant containers, but also grows on "normal" ground in the garden. It requires moist (or wet) loamy soil and can be sown in nutritious muddy compost, as well as in a pot standing in water. Sweet Flag seeds planted in December germinate the following spring. Otherwise, it is recommended to sow them and keep them at about 15 °C for 3 days, then leave them to germinate in the refrigerator at 0-5 °C and check for germinating seeds regularly. Loves lots of sun.
