Sweet woodruff grows in shady deciduous forests. It is a medicinal and spice plant used for desserts and, most famously, for May wine. To obtain the typical flavor, the herb is harvested before flowering and then allowed to wither slightly.

The perennial sweet woodruff needs cold to germinate. The seeds should either be sown in the fall outdoors or some kind of cold treatment must be carried out before sowing. This can be done by mixing the seeds with a little slightly moist sand (in a zip bag, for example) and first keep them warm for 2-4 weeks (15-20 °C), then for 4-6 weeks at 0-4 ° C. After that the seed can be sown. Galium odoratum likes partial shade.
