The Tamarillo is, botanically speaking, no real tomato but is also called "Tree Tomato". The bushy plant originates from tropical Brazil and is ideal for the greenhouse, winter garden or as a pot plant.


Tamarillos are egg-shaped, 4-7cm long fruits that should be peeled as the skin contains bitters. The pulp has a very interesting, sweet flavour which, with increasing maturity, turns harsher. The fruits can be combined well with other fruits and served as an exotic dessert.

Tropical tree for the greenhouse, winter garden or as a pot plant. Press seeds into sowing compost and keep them warm. Germinates at 15-25°C in 2-4 weeks. Most often, the tamarillo bears tomato-like fruits from the second year onwards. Ideal location: Full sun. Plenty of water and fertilizer. Possibly cut back for winter.
