The Virginia Strawberry is a North American wild strawberry. It resembles the European wild strawberry very much in looks - only the fruits are slightly larger and coloured more intensively. When it comes to location, it, however, is a lot less
demanding. Also among inconvenient conditions, it bears fruits reliably. It's robust and insensitive against cold and heat.
Together with the Chilean Strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis), it's a parent of the modern Garden Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa). Due to its very aromatic fruits, it has already been cultivated before the development of the Garden Strawberry and processed by breeding. In England, there is the famous variety "Little Scarlet" from which a luxurious jam can be made.

Wild Strawberries form many offshoots soon and tend to spread strongly if they aren't restricted. They preferably grow in the light half shadow underneath protecting hedges or wood.

  • Sowing indoors in spring. Only slightly sprinkle with soil. Germination can take 4 weeks or longer. The seedlings are very small in the beginning but then grow fast. Prick them later and plant them out in summer. The plant is completely hardy. Forms offshoots and can, thereby, be bred.
  • Prefers sunny to half-shady locations and requires moist but well-permeable, nutritious, and humous-rich soils.
