Sowing & cultivation
- Sowing period: Possible all year round at temperatures between +5-28°C. Outdoors, spring sowing commonly in March to mid-April. Autumn and winter sowing: From mid-July to the end of October.
- Sowing depth: 0.5cm, broadcast in rows
- Ideal germination temperature: 16-18°C Germination period: 8-21 days, depending on time of sowing.
- Row spacing: 10-30cm
- Planting distance: 8cm
- Location: Preferably sunny
- Soil: Prefers calcareous, sandy, loamy soils, is very salt-sensitive
- Care: Needs little care and fertilization, occasional hoeing and consistent moisture are very beneficial. As it is a light-feeder, it doesn't need to be fertilized. Wild corn salad is self-tolerant and can grow in the same place for a longer period. With threatening black frosts, it's very rewarding to cover the plants with brushwood or doubled fleece.
- Harvest: Depending on the time of sowing, it can be harvested after 6-12 weeks. If the plant should grow on, the heart has to remain. Otherwise, it's cut very near-ground.
- Family: Valerian family (Valerianaceae)
