Indigenous wild plant from the rose family. Wood Avens has the same flavour as cloves and can also be used like them. When exotic spices were still prohibitive, their rootstock served as cloves substitute.
The leaves of the evergreen plant are a good source for winter leaf salads while the root is especially of medicinal significance. Wood avens is also known as an aphrodisiac.

Furthermore, it has also been used as a beer and liqueur spice and its essential oils, mainly the contained eugenol, are an important ingredient of the commercially sold cloves oil. Due to its characteristic scent, it's also a popular incense plant.

As a decorative shrub, many different colourful breedings with partly filled blossoms, which are suitable for the decorative shrub garden, exist. Wild wood avens, with its small yellow blossoms, is beautiful to look at but rather inconspicuous and no classic decorative plant.

Perennial plant. Loves sun to half-shade. The plants need a distance of approx. 30cm. Sowing: Preculture. Germinates at approx. 20°C. The seeds are covered with a layer of earth 1-2 times thicker than the seeds. Prevent waterlogging in the first weeks. Plant out strong plantlets. Cold stratification can be advantageous.
