The yellow bedstraw is a very robust, frost tolerant herbaceous wild plant that occurs on all continents. It reaches up to 70cm in height and forms yellow flowers which exude an intense honey fragrance. It was added to mattresses as a bedstraw,
since it keeps away fleas. It was also used in midwifery - the name lady's bedstraw reflects these two uses.

The leaves of the herb are edible and can be added to salads or cooked. Roasted seeds are considered a good substitute for coffee. For a long time, the rennet of the whole plant and the flowers was used for the coagulation of milk and the production of cheese. Above all, British cheese varieties were dyed with the bright yellow color of the flowers' dyestuff. In addition to the yellow food dye from the flowers, a red dye can be produced from the roots.

Alleged medical benefits of the plant in folk medicine are numerous, but research nowadays focuses on cancer therapy. Especially in breast cancer the plant is said to develop its healing effect.
