Most sought after of all San Pedro cactus plants, the Peruvian San Pedro (syn. Echinopsis) has mostly only 4 ribs. This variety is at home in the highlands of Peru. It is an arborescent cactus which can grow up to six meters tall. Its white,
fragrant flowers open at night.
Ethnobotanically speaking the San Pedro Macho is a very interesting cactus, as it has a great importance not only for ritual purposes, but also as a useful plant and medicine plant. Its purposes reach from curing for sore throats and antirheumatic effects over to the indigenous veterinary medicine, and it even makes a good shampoo.

San Pedro may be grown as a pot plant in northern areas. It prefers a sandy, well-drained soil. In winter, the dormant period, plants should be watered very carefully, as they need almost no water at all. In summer they may be watered more often.
