Its flowers are yellow or white and, subsequently, form berries whose seeds are used in West Africa for various purposes - together with the processed bark of the voacanga tree, they serve as a stimulant and aphrodisiac as well as a ceremonial intoxicant.
The most important active ingredient of this plant is the iboga alkaloid voacangine which also has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Sowing & cultivation
Voacanga Africana is a tropical plant. In most climates, it grows in protected areas like balcony, patio, or greenhouse, but it is not winter hardy. Also good as a houseplant. The seeds germinate better after acid treatment. Therefore, they are soaked in vinegar (5% acidity) for about 20 minutes. Rinse and sow about 1cm deep in pots and keep warm (coco soil is ideal). Later on, voacanga loves nutrient-rich, humus soil.
