Description

After a long period of absence from our dinner plates, old heirloom vegetables are finally making a huge comeback. It is extraordinary to realize that there are so many old varieties but only very few that we still remember.

Nutritionists advise in regards to the colour of vegetables and healthy diets, to eat your way through 'the rainbow', as each vegetable's colour indicates different constituents, important for the body's well-being and health. For example, anthocyanin, which is health promoting, is responsible for the bluish-purple colouring in fruit and vegetables.
Unfortunately, there are not that many purple vegetable varieties commercially available in supermarkets, apart from red cabbage and maybe beetroots.
For this seed kit we therefore hand selected 7 rare purple vegetable varieties for your kitchen garden:
  • Purple carrot 'Zanahoria morada' (Daucus carota) approx. 1000 seeds
A purple heirloom carrot cultivar deriving from the true wild carrot species, which has a pronounced aromatic carrot flavour.
  • Curly kale 'Red Russian' (Brassica oleracea convar. acephala var.sabellica) approx. 100 seeds
The 'Red Russian' is a robust curly kale variety from Siberia, which has an exquisite flavour. The name refers to its leaves, which change to red after taking in sunlight.
  • Purple sprouting (Brassica oleracea var. italica) approx. 100 seeds
A well producing sprouting cabbage variety, which forms delicate, crunchy broccoli branches that regrow over again.
  • Kohlrabi 'Blue delicacy' (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) approx. 100 seeds
This purple Kohlrabi variety is beautiful to the eye, has a deliciously delicate flavour and a texture that melts in your mouth.
  • Purple Brussels sprouts 'Red ball' (Brassica oleracea) approx. 50 seeds
'Red ball' is a mild and slightly sweet tasting Brussels sprouts variety. Its beautiful purple colour intensifies with falling temperatures in autumn.
  • Radicchio/ chicory 'Palla Rossa' (Cichorium intybus var. foliosum) approx. 200 seeds
'Palla Rossa' is a traditional radicchio variety from Chioggia in Italy, with the typical dark red-white veined leaves and the unique, slightly bitter tasting flavour.
  • Red cabbage 'Schwarzkopf' (Brassica oleracea) approx. 100 seeds
'Schwarzkopf' is an easy to grow red cabbage variety with an exquisite aroma, which can be cultivated all year around.
The seeds of each variety are packaged in a separate sachet.
