Chilli ‘Numex Suave Yellow’ – Habanero Flavour Without the Heat

The ‘Numex Suave Yellow’ chilli is a unique Capsicum chinense variety, selectively bred for its intense flavour and very low heat. It originates from the breeding programme at New Mexico State University, known as the NuMex line. The name “Suave” translates as “mild” or “gentle”, which describes this variety perfectly.

In terms of flavour, NuMex Suave Yellow delivers the typical tropical and fruity habanero aroma – often described as slightly sweet and jam-like – but without the characteristic heat of most chinense chillies. With a heat level of around 1 to 3 on the Scoville scale, it’s ideal for those sensitive to spice but still looking for full-bodied flavour.

The plants are vigorous and bushy, reaching a height of approximately 100 to 120 cm. They produce numerous small to medium-sized, heavily wrinkled fruits that ripen from green to a bright yellow. This is a high-yielding variety that provides a steady crop of ripening fruits over an extended period.

In the kitchen, NuMex Suave Yellow is highly versatile: excellent fresh in salads and salsas, or used in cooking for mild sauces, chutneys or relishes. Due to its thinner fruit walls, it is less suitable for drying, but it releases its full flavour particularly well in fresh and cooked dishes.

Sowing and Growing Chilli ‘Numex Suave Yellow’

Sow seeds indoors from January or February in warm conditions between 22 and 28 °C. Place the seeds about 0.5 to 1 cm deep in loose, nutrient-rich compost. After the last frosts, young plants can be transplanted outdoors, into a greenhouse or into larger containers.

A sunny, warm and sheltered position encourages strong flavour and good yields. This variety is well suited to container growing – pots with a volume of 10 to 20 litres or more are recommended.
