Description
Soapwort is native to the temperate regions of Europe and Asia. This perennial plant is often grown as an ornamental for its attractive pale pink flowers. It also has a long tradition as a useful plant.
The branched, finger-thick rhizome is used for this purpose. As the name suggests, the rootstock contains abundant saponins and is still used in some areas as a natural soap substitute. Its medicinal use has been documented since antiquity. It is regarded as an expectorant for bronchitis with persistent mucus.
It is also known as an ingredient in the production of traditional halva. Soapwort is undemanding and easy to cultivate in the garden.
