Description
Dill, also known as cucumber herb, is one of the oldest culinary and medicinal plants known to humanity. Its use dates back to ancient Egypt, where it was valued for its soothing effect on the stomach. In Greek and Roman antiquity, dill was likewise regarded as a symbol of prosperity and a cherished kitchen herb. The variety 'Compact' has been specially bred for cultivation in small spaces: it remains significantly shorter than traditional dill and is therefore ideal for balcony planters, raised beds or container growing.
With its finely feathered, aromatic foliage, dill lends a distinctive fresh flavour to a wide range of dishes such as fish, cucumber salad or herb quark. At the same time, it is an important plant for pollinators and supports biodiversity in the garden. Dill should not be planted next to fennel, as the two species may have an inhibiting effect on each other.
