Description
A Striking Green Eye-Catcher with Dahlia-Like Appeal
Zinnia 'Envy' is perhaps the most unusual member of the zinnia family. Its fresh green, almost chartreuse-coloured blooms are fully double and dahlia-like, held aloft on strong stems – a rare shade that stands out both in mixed herbaceous borders and in contemporary cut flower arrangements. This variety originates from the long breeding tradition surrounding Zinnia elegans, which has been cherished for generations for its abundant summer flowering. 'Envy' deliberately breaks the mould: green instead of the usual reds, pinks or oranges.
In borders, it pairs beautifully with purples and violet tones (e.g. Salvia, Verbena, Amaranthus), or creates impact when planted en masse in a monochrome scheme. As a cut flower, it excels with sturdy stems and good vase life – a standout choice for gardeners and florists seeking something truly distinctive.

Sowing and care
Sowing and Care of Zinnia 'Envy'
Zinnias thrive in warmth and full sun. For an early start, you can sow Zinnia 'Envy' indoors 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost (at 18–22 °C), or alternatively sow directly outdoors once the soil has warmed and all risk of frost has passed. Sow at a depth of approximately 0.5–1 cm and keep the compost evenly moist. Germination usually occurs within 7–14 days.
Choose a free-draining, nutrient-rich soil and a position in full sun – this encourages long stems and the most vibrant flower colour. Transplant outdoors after the last frost (e.g. after the ‘Ice Saints’), prick out seedlings, and space them 20–30 cm apart. Pinching out the growing tips early on encourages branching and more flowers. Regularly deadhead spent blooms to prolong the flowering period until the first frost.
Water evenly and avoid waterlogging; during hot spells, a mulch layer will help conserve moisture. In warm, humid weather, watch for powdery mildew – good air circulation and watering in the morning can help prevent this. Depending on growing conditions, plants typically reach a height of 60–80 cm, but may grow taller in rich soils.
