Description
Exotic Ornamental and Edible Plant for Borders, Containers & Balconies
The Jewels-of-Opar (Talinum paniculatum) – also known as “Jewel of Opar” and, regionally, as Surinam spinach – originates from the warm, semi-arid regions of the Americas and has become established worldwide as an easy-care balcony plant and versatile garden perennial. Delicate pink flowers in airy, open panicles and bright, decorative seed heads provide an elegant, light appearance throughout the summer. The young, vitamin-rich leaves are edible and can be enjoyed fresh in salads or lightly steamed – a rare combination of exotic ornamental and nutrient-rich wild plant.
Medicinal Plant in Traditional Chinese Medicine
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Talinum paniculatum is valued as a strengthening tonic. It is regarded as supportive to the body’s natural regeneration and is appreciated for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Both the leaves and roots are used, processed into teas, extracts, or powders. In various cultures, the Jewels-of-Opar is considered a valuable medicinal plant for promoting vitality and general well-being.

Sowing and care
Sowing and Care of Jewels-of-Opar
Talinum paniculatum thrives in sunny, warm positions and well-drained growing media (for example, a mixture of sand, loam, and compost). For early sowing under cover, fine seed is sown from February to July; it is a light-dependent germinator and should be pressed gently onto the surface or covered only with the thinnest layer of medium. Keep evenly moist: germination usually occurs after 14–21 days. Direct sowing in a sheltered position is also possible once summer warmth has set in. After pricking out, continue to grow on in bright, warm conditions. In a border or a large container, Jewels-of-Opar grows compactly and reliably – also ideal as an easy-care balcony plant. During the growing season, water moderately but regularly; avoid waterlogging. Feed occasionally with a balanced fertiliser. This species is not frost-hardy: before the first frosts, bring container plants indoors and overwinter them frost-free, keeping them on the dry side.
