Description
Roseroot (Rhodiola rosea) grows wildly especially in the higher Arctic areas of Europe and Asia. It's very resistant and even survives extended drought and cold periods although it prospers better on slightly moister substrate. The approx. 20-30cm high growing plant forms a thick rootstock (rhizome) that wonderfully scents of roses when cut freshly. In its heyday, you can already see it shine from far away with its yellow, partly red-rimmed petals.
Already the Vikings and the inhabitants of Siberia used the positive characteristics of the plant as a traditional pharmaceutical. In Siberia, up to now, they say: "People that drink roseroot tea get more than a hundred years old". Similar to ginseng, it's said to increase memory and the ability to concentrate and stimulate power and endurance. Meanwhile, the ground root is sold expensively due to the high demand. In China, it's described as "golden root" and had already been known to many emperors due to its healing power.

Sowing and care
Surface sow in a sunny greenhouse in spring on a fertile well drained sandy loam. Rhodiola seeds will usually germinate in about 3 weeks at 10 °C. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots when they are strong enough, and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Plant out in early summer of the following year. They like raised and sunny grounds and can be grown as a nice looking ground cover as well. If well established the plant is drought-resistant.
