Description
An aubergine that can be eaten raw - unusual for Solanum melongena
The aubergine 'Tarim' is a specialist breeding from ReinSaat in Austria and belongs to the early maturing Asian types of Solanum melongena. The variety is still under official trial and is valued in the organic sector as a particularly productive, stable and quality focused type.
'Tarim' produces numerous slender fruits around 10 to 15 cm long with pale violet skin. The flesh is white, fine and tender with a slightly sweet flavour. Bitterness, which can occur in classic aubergine types, is hardly noticeable here. This mild quality even allows the fruit to be eaten raw in thin slices or strips - a rare characteristic in aubergines.
As an Asian type, 'Tarim' follows the tradition of early maturing, long fruited aubergines suited to shorter growing seasons. The plants are considered highly productive and uniform in fruit type. The slender fruits are ideal for quick wok dishes, skewers or Mediterranean oven recipes, as they cook rapidly while retaining their delicate flavour.

Sowing and care
Sowing and care of aubergine 'Tarim'
Pre cultivation takes place indoors from January to March in warm conditions. The optimal germination temperature is 22 to 25 °C, with a germination period of around 8 to 14 days. Sowing depth is about 1 cm. Aubergines require a fine seedbed and consistent moisture.
After the last frosts, young plants can be transplanted outdoors or earlier into a greenhouse. A spacing of approximately 70 x 50 cm is recommended. 'Tarim' prefers a very sunny, sheltered position with nutrient rich, well drained soil. As a warmth loving crop, it requires regular watering and good nutrient supply to achieve high yields.
