Description
Batavia lettuce for warm summer months
The Batavia lettuce 'Maravilla de Verano' is one of the particularly heat tolerant lettuce varieties and is especially known for summer cultivation. Its name means 'summer wonder' and refers to one of the most important characteristics of this variety: its strong resistance to bolting. Even in warm weather the lettuce remains harvestable for a long time and forms stable, aromatic heads.
Batavia lettuces form their own group within head lettuces and combine the pleasant crispness of iceberg lettuce with the aromatic taste of tender leaf lettuces. 'Maravilla de Verano' develops large, loose to semi closed heads with decorative upright outer leaves.
The attractive leaf colouring is particularly striking. The outer leaves show a reddish to red brown colour pattern, while the heart remains light green. This makes the lettuce especially decorative both in the bed and on the plate. In terms of flavour the variety impresses with an aromatic, mildly sweet lettuce taste and a pleasant crisp texture.
Thanks to its robustness this variety is suitable for cultivation throughout the entire outdoor growing season from spring to autumn. In addition to the classic use as head or Batavia lettuce, 'Maravilla de Verano' can also be grown very well as cut lettuce or for baby leaf harvest. Young leaves can be harvested early and produce an aromatic, colourful leaf salad.

Sowing and care
Sowing & care of Batavia lettuce 'Maravilla de Verano'
Batavia lettuce prefers a sunny to partially shaded location with loose, humus rich garden soil. Sowing can take place from spring to summer. For an early harvest, seedlings can be started from about February or March under glass, while later sowings can be done directly in open ground. Lettuce seeds are sown very shallowly and covered with about 0.1 to 0.5 cm of soil, as the seeds require light for germination. Germination takes place at temperatures between about 10 and 15 °C within 6 to 14 days.
The young plants are thinned or transplanted to about 25 cm spacing in the row and around 30 cm between rows. Even soil moisture is important, but waterlogging should be avoided. Drought stress can promote bolting. A layer of compost before planting is usually sufficient as nutrient supply. The lettuce is harvested as soon as loose heads have formed. Since 'Maravilla de Verano' is very resistant to bolting, the lettuce can remain in the bed for some time even when ready to harvest.
